A Brief History of Non-Surgical Fat Reduction

The quest to reduce localized fat without surgery has led to significant innovations in aesthetic medicine.

  • Early 2000s: The concept of injectable fat dissolution began with treatments used off-label, but without a standardized, FDA-approved formula, results were inconsistent and less predictable.

  • 2015: A major breakthrough occurred with the FDA-approval of Kybella® (deoxycholic acid) specifically for the treatment of moderate to severe submental fat (double chin). This marked the first injectable drug approved for this purpose, providing a safe and effective non-surgical solution.

  • Today: Kybella remains the gold standard for non-surgical double chin reduction. Its active ingredient, synthetic deoxycholic acid, is a molecule that occurs naturally in the body to break down dietary fat. Kybella's approval paved the way for a new category of aesthetic treatments focused on targeted fat destruction, solidifying its place as a trusted procedure for jawline contouring.

How Kybella Works: Science & Benefits

The Science Behind Kybella

Key Benefits of Kybella

  • Step 1: Kybella is injected in multiple precise points into the fat layer beneath the chin.

  • Step 2: The deoxycholic acid works by physically breaking down the cell membranes of fat cells, causing their destruction.

  • Step 3: The body's metabolic system then naturally processes and eliminates the destroyed fat cell debris and contents over a period of several weeks. Once destroyed, these fat cells are gone for good.

  • Permanent Fat Reduction: Kybella is the only non-surgical treatment that permanently destroys fat cells under the chin. This provides lasting results, unlike treatments that only temporarily shrink fat cells.

  • Non-Surgical & Minimally Invasive: There are no scalpels, stitches, or general anesthesia. The procedure is performed with fine needles, offering a transformative solution without the risks and downtime of surgery.

  • Enhanced Facial Contour: By eliminating submental fat, Kybella dramatically improves the definition of the jawline and chin, creating a more youthful, attractive, and balanced facial profile.

The Kybella Treatment Process

Before Your Appointment

To minimize the potential for bruising and swelling, we recommend:

  • Avoiding blood thinners (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen), certain supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, garlic), and alcohol for 5-7 days prior to your appointment.

  • Informing your provider of any history of difficulty swallowing, bleeding disorders, or an active infection in the treatment area.

During the Procedure (15-30 mins)

  1. Consultation & Mapping: Your provider will confirm the treatment plan. They will then mark a grid of injection points under your chin to ensure even and comprehensive coverage of the fat pad.

  2. Numbing: A topical numbing cream may be applied. Many providers also use a cold air device or ice to numb the area and provide comfort during the injections.

  3. Injections: Using a very fine needle, your provider will administer a series of injections into the predetermined points in the submental fat. You may feel a slight burning or stinging sensation during the injection process.

  4. Post-Treatment Care: Immediately after, we will apply ice packs to the area to manage swelling and provide you with detailed aftercare instructions.

Aftercare & Recovery

  • Day 1-3: Expect significant swelling, redness, and firmness under the chin. The area may feel numb, tender, or bruised. This is a normal inflammatory response indicating the treatment is working. Swelling can be quite pronounced, sometimes making the area look larger initially.

  • Day 4-7: Swelling will begin to subside but will still be noticeable. Bruising, if it occurs, will start to fade. The area may feel hard or lumpy to the touch as the body works to eliminate the destroyed fat cells.

  • Week 2-4: The majority of the swelling will resolve. You will begin to see the initial contouring effects.

  • Week 6-8: The final results from your first session become fully visible as the body completes its natural elimination process.

Kybella Results & Longevity

Kybella results are not immediate and unfold as the body processes the destroyed fat. You will begin to notice a visible improvement in the contour of your jawline 4-6 weeks after treatment, with the most dramatic results appearing 8-12 weeks after your session.

Most patients require 2-4 treatment sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, to achieve their desired result. The number of sessions needed depends on the amount of fat you have and how your body responds.

The key benefit of Kybella is that the results are permanent. The fat cells destroyed during treatment are gone forever and cannot regenerate or store fat again. However, it is important to maintain a stable weight, as significant weight gain can cause remaining fat cells in the area (or elsewhere) to enlarge, potentially compromising your sculpted results.

Kybella for Men

Why More Men Are Choosing Kybella

  • Defines a Strong Jawline: A well-defined jawline is a hallmark of a strong, masculine appearance. Kybella effectively eliminates the soft, undefined area under the chin, sharpening the jawline and improving the overall profile.

  • Non-Surgical Solution: Men often prefer a discreet, non-surgical option that requires no downtime, allowing them to return to work and other activities without a lengthy recovery period.

  • Addresses a Stubborn Problem: Submental fat in men is often genetically determined and resistant to even the most rigorous diet and exercise regimens. Kybella directly targets and eliminates this stubborn fat permanently.

Kybella Safety, Side Effects & Risks

Is Kybella Safe?

Yes. Kybella is an FDA-approved treatment with a well-established safety profile when administered by a qualified and experienced medical professional who is knowledgeable about the anatomy of the area.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are very common, expected, and are a sign that the treatment is working. They are localized to the treatment area and are temporary.

  • The most common side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness (induration) or lumpiness. These effects are typically most pronounced in the first 1-2 weeks and resolve on their own.

  • Other common side effects can include difficulty swallowing and the formation of small bumps or nodules under the skin, which usually resolve as the healing process continues.

Serious Risks (Rare)
While rare, more serious risks can include:

  • Nerve Injury: Injury to marginal mandibular nerve could cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. This is typically temporary and resolves as inflammation subsides. Risk is minimized by choosing an expert injector.

  • Ulceration or Skin Injury: If injected too superficially, the solution can damage the skin.

  • Hair Loss: Temporary hair loss in the injection area has been reported in some cases.

Who Should Avoid Kybella?

You are not a candidate for Kybella if you:

  • Have an infection in the treatment area.

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Have excessive loose skin or poor skin elasticity (a "turkey neck"), as Kybella does not tighten skin. A surgical neck lift may be a better option.

  • Have had prior surgery in the treatment area that may have altered anatomy.
