Microneedling (Collagen Induction Therapy)

Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that harnesses the skin's natural ability to repair itself. Using a device equipped with fine, sterile needles, we create controlled micro-injuries in the skin to trigger the production of new collagen and elastin. This process effectively rejuvenates the skin from within, improving texture, firmness, and tone while reducing the appearance of scars, wrinkles, and large pores.

At Luminer Wellness Spa in Miami, we utilize advanced microneedling technology to deliver transformative results. Our medical professionals tailor each treatment to your specific concerns, ensuring a safe and effective journey to smoother, more radiant, and youthful-looking skin. It is one of the most versatile and powerful treatments in aesthetic medicine.

A Brief History of Microneedling

The concept of controlled skin injury for rejuvenation has evolved significantly over the decades.

  • 1990s: The modern concept of microneedling was pioneered by dermatologists. Initially, dermatrollers—hand-held devices with multiple needles—were used to create micro-channels in the skin. This was a breakthrough for treating scars and wrinkles, but the rolling motion could cause tearing and uneven penetration.

  • Early 2000s: The technology advanced with the development of automated, pen-like devices that use a vertical stamping motion. This allowed for more precise needle depth control, less trauma to the skin, and better, more consistent results. It became a mainstream professional treatment.

  • Present Day: Microneedling has become a gold standard treatment for skin rejuvenation. Its applications have expanded to include RF (Radiofrequency) Microneedling (e.g., Morpheus8), which adds heat energy to stimulate collagen even deeper. It is now widely used to enhance product penetration and treat a vast range of concerns, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of aesthetic medicine.

Why Choose Luminer Wellness for Microneedling in Miami?

Top 4 Reasons Miami Trusts Us for Microneedling

Medical Expertise & Precision

Our licensed medical professionals have an expert understanding of facial anatomy and needle depth. We customize the treatment depth and protocol based on your specific concerns—using finer, shallower needles for fine lines and hyperpigmentation around the eyes, and deeper needles for acne scars on the cheeks.

Advanced Technology:

We use state-of-the-art automated microneedling pens that ensure each needle penetration is perfectly vertical and consistent. This avoids the dragging and tearing associated with older roller devices, leading to more effective results and a safer treatment with less downtime.

Synergistic Serums:

We maximize the "channel" phase. Immediately after needling, while the micro-channels are still open, we infuse the skin with potent, targeted serums—such as hyaluronic acid for hydration, growth factors for healing, or vitamin C for brightness—allowing for unparalleled product absorption and efficacy.

Proven, Versatile Results:

We leverage microneedling's unique ability to effectively treat a wide range of concerns: acne scarring, surgical scars, fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, stretch marks, and overall skin texture and laxity. It is a true multi-tasking treatment.

How Microneedling Works: Science

The Science Behind Microneedling

Collagen and elastin are the structural proteins that keep skin firm, tight, and smooth. Production of these proteins naturally declines with age.

  • Step 1 (Controlled Injury): The fine needles create hundreds of microscopic channels in the dermis.

  • Step 2 (Inflammatory Response): This triggers the body's natural wound-healing process. Platelets and growth factors are rushed to the site.

  • Step 3 (Collagen & Elastin Production): Fibroblast cells are activated to produce massive amounts of new collagen and elastin to repair the "damage."

  • Step 4 (Remodeling): Over the following weeks and months, this new tissue remodels, thickening the skin, smoothing out scars, and reducing the appearance of wrinkles from the inside out.

The Microneedling Treatment Process

Before Your Appointment

  • Avoid sun exposure, blood thinners, and NSAIDs for 1-2 weeks prior.

  • Discontinue use of retinoids, AHAs, and BHAs for 5-7 days prior.

  • If you have a history of cold sores, we will prescribe an antiviral to prevent an outbreak.

During the Treatment (60-90 mins)

  1. Numbing: A strong topical anesthetic is applied for 45-60 minutes to ensure maximum comfort.

  2. Cleansing & Mapping: The face is thoroughly cleansed, and the treatment areas are mapped out.

  3. The Procedure: The physician or esthetician glides the microneedling device over the skin. You will feel a vibration and a mild scratching sensation. The depth is adjusted based on the area being treated.

  4. Serum Infusion: A targeted, hyaluronic acid-based serum is massaged into the skin to soak deep into the freshly created micro-channels.

  5. Soothing: A calming serum and/or LED light therapy is applied to reduce redness and inflammation.

Aftercare & Recovery

  • Day 1-3 (The "Sunburn" Phase): Skin will be red, swollen, and feel tight, similar to a moderate sunburn. This is a normal inflammatory response.

  • Day 3-5 (The "Sanding" Phase): Skin will feel dry, tight, and begin to peel or flake. This is the old, damaged skin shedding.

  • Day 5-7: The surface has healed. Makeup can usually be worn. Pinkness may linger for a few more days.

  • Crucial Aftercare: You must use the provided post-care kit, avoid sun exposure, and not use any active products until cleared by your provider.

Microneedling Results & Longevity

Results are progressive and continue to improve as new collagen forms.

  • Initial Results (1-2 weeks): You will see an initial "glow" from improved skin texture and hydration.

  • True Results (4-6 weeks): The first signs of collagen remodeling become visible, with improved skin firmness.

  • Optimal Results (3-6 months): The most significant results—improved scar texture, firmness, and wrinkle reduction—appear as collagen production peaks.

The results are long-lasting because you have built new, healthy collagen. To maintain and build upon results, a series of 3-4 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, is typically recommended. Annual touch-up treatments can help sustain the effects.

Microneedling for Men

Why Men Choose Microneedling:

  • Treats Acne Scarring: Effectively smoothes pitted scars from teenage or adult acne.

  • Thickens Skin: Counters the thinning skin that can occur with aging.

  • Minimizes Large Pores: Addresses oiliness and enlarged pores, especially in the T-zone.

  • Non-Invasive Maintenance: Provides significant rejuvenation without the commitment or downtime of surgery.

Microneedling Safety, Side Effects & Risks

Is Dermaplaning Safe?

Yes, when performed by a medical professional in a clinical setting. The use of sterile, single-use needle tips is mandatory to prevent infection.

Possible Side Effects

Expected side effects are temporary and part of the healing process:

  • Redness, swelling, and skin sensitivity for 24-72 hours.

  • Dryness, flaking, and itching for 3-5 days.

  • Minor pinpoint bleeding during the treatment is normal.

Serious Risks (Rare)
Serious risks are very rare but can include:

  • Infection: If post-care instructions are not followed or non-sterile equipment is used.

  • Hyperpigmentation: If done on sun-tanned skin or if sun exposure is not avoided after treatment.

  • Skin Injury: If performed incorrectly with incorrect depth or technique.

Who Should Avoid Microneedling?

You are not a candidate if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Have active acne, cold sores, or a skin infection.

  • Have a history of keloid scarring.

  • Have used Accutane in the last 6-12 months.

  • Have an autoimmune disorder that affects wound healing.
