A Brief History of PRP Therapy

The use of PRP is a story of medical innovation finding a powerful application in aesthetics.

  • 1970s-1980s: The concept of using platelet-rich plasma began in the field of maxillofacial and plastic surgery. Surgeons observed that patients healed faster and with better outcomes when their own platelet-concentrated blood was applied during procedures.

  • 1990s-2000s: PRP gained widespread acceptance in sports medicine and orthopedics to accelerate the healing of torn tendons, ligaments, and muscle injuries. Famous athletes like Tiger Woods and Rafael Nadal received PRP treatments for injuries, bringing significant public attention to the therapy.

  • 2000s-Present: The aesthetic world adopted PRP, pioneering its use for facial rejuvenation and hair restoration. Its popularity skyrocketed after being publicly endorsed by celebrities, cementing its status as a powerful, natural alternative to more invasive procedures. Today, PRP is a cornerstone of regenerative aesthetics, continually researched for new applications.

How PRP Therapy Works: Science & Benefits

The Science Behind PRP

Key Benefits of PRP

  • Step 1: A small sample of your blood is drawn (similar to a lab test).

  • Step 2: The blood is placed in a specialized centrifuge that spins at high speeds, separating the red blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is a concentrated golden-yellow liquid packed with growth factors.

  • Step 3: This activated PRP is then injected or applied topically (with microneedling) into the targeted treatment areas.

  • Step 4: The concentrated growth factors flood the tissue, triggering a powerful healing response. This stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin, increases blood supply, and promotes the growth of new, healthy cells.

  •  Natural Biostimulator: Jump-starts your body’s own collagen production and healing processes for lasting, natural-looking results.

  • Versatile Treatment: Effectively addresses multiple concerns: facial rejuvenation, under-eye circles, acne scarring, stretch marks, hair loss, and overall skin texture improvement.

  • Minimal Downtime: The procedure is minimally invasive with a short recovery period, primarily involving redness and mild swelling.

  • Safe & Compatible: Since it's derived from your own body, there is virtually no risk of allergy, rejection, or infection. It can be safely combined with other treatments like microneedling for enhanced results.

The PRP Treatment Process

Before Your Appointment

To prepare your body for optimal results and minimize bruising:

  • Stay well-hydrated for several days before your treatment.

  • Avoid blood thinners (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen), certain supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, garlic), and alcohol for 5-7 days prior to your appointment.

  • Inform your provider of any history of bleeding disorders or blood-borne diseases.

During the Procedure (60-90 mins)

  1. Blood Draw: Approximately 15-30 mL of blood is drawn from your arm, just like a routine blood test.

  2. Centrifugation: Your blood vial is placed in a centrifuge for 10-15 minutes to separate the components and concentrate the platelets.

  3. Preparation: The PRP is drawn into syringes for injection. It may be activated with calcium chloride to initiate the release of growth factors.

  4. Application (For Facial Rejuvenation):Option A

  • (Injections): The PRP is injected into specific areas of the face (e.g., under eyes, nasolabial folds, cheeks) to stimulate collagen.

  • Option B (Microneedling with PRP): The face is numbed, and a microneedling device creates micro-channels in the skin. The PRP is then topically applied, allowing it to deeply penetrate and absorb. This is the most common and effective method for overall skin rejuvenation.

Aftercare & Recovery

  • Day 1-2: Expect redness, swelling, and mild tenderness, similar to a sunburn. The skin may feel tight. It is imperative to avoid touching, rubbing, or applying any products not approved by your provider. Avoid strenuous exercise, sweating, and sun exposure.

  • Day 3-5: Redness and swelling subside. You may experience mild dryness or flaking as the skin undergoes its healing and rejuvenation process.

  • Week 2+: Your skin will begin to look refreshed. The true results develop over the next 3-6 months as new collagen forms.

PRP Results & Longevity

PRP is a regenerative treatment, not a filler. Therefore, results are not immediate. The process of collagen neogenesis (new collagen formation) takes time.

You may notice an initial "glow" and improved skin texture within a few weeks due to increased hydration and blood flow. However, the most significant results—improved skin tightness, diminished wrinkles, and faded scars—begin to appear at 4-6 weeks and continue to improve for up to 6 months.

A single treatment can provide noticeable results, but a series of 3 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, is typically recommended for optimal and long-lasting outcomes. The results of PRP are long-lasting because you are fundamentally improving the quality of your skin. To maintain results, annual touch-up treatments are recommended.

PRP for Hair Restoration

How PRP Works for Hair Loss:

The concentrated growth factors in PRP:

  • Wake up dormant hair follicles in the telogen (resting) phase, pushing them into the anagen (growth) phase.

  • Prolong the growth phase of existing hairs, making them thicker and stronger.

  • Increase blood supply to the follicles, delivering essential nutrients.

  • Reduce inflammation around the follicle, which is a key factor in hair loss.

Why Miami Chooses Us for PRP Hair Restoration:
We combine PRP with a comprehensive approach to hair health, potentially including nutritional advice and topical treatments, to maximize follicle regeneration and growth.

PRP Safety, Side Effects & Risks

Is PRP Safe?

Extremely safe. Because PRP is derived from your own blood, the risks of allergic reaction, rejection, and transmission of infectious disease are virtually eliminated. It is one of the safest procedures in aesthetic medicine.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are generally mild and temporary, primarily related to the injection process itself:

  • Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, and bruising at the injection sites. This typically resolves within 24-48 hours.

  • For hair treatments, minor scalp tenderness is common.

  • As with any injection, there is a minimal risk of infection, which is mitigated by our strict sterile techniques.

Serious Risks (Very Rare)
Serious risks are exceedingly rare but could include:

  • Injury to nerves or blood vessels if not performed by a trained medical professional.

  • Calcification at the injection site is a theoretical risk if the PRP is not prepared correctly.

Who Should Avoid PRP?

You may not be a good candidate for PRP if you:

  • Have a blood disorder or platelet dysfunction syndrome.

  • Have a history of skin cancer or are undergoing chemotherapy/radiation.

  • Have an active infection or skin disease in the treatment area.

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Have been diagnosed with autoimmune diseases that affect wound healing.
